Reserve Police Officer Program

The Ronan Police Department established the Ronan Police Reserve Officer Program as a service organization.  A  Reserve Police Officer works under the general supervision and in all conditions, performing a variety of law enforcement duties that involve protecting life and property; enforcing laws and ordinances; conducting criminal investigations, crime prevention and suppression; preserving the public peace; performing special assignments in the protection of life and property; and related work as required.

This is a sworn, part-time, volunteer member who has peace officer status where incumbents perform all duties required of peace officers to effectively respond to and resolve situations encountered.

The purpose of the Reserve Program is to assist full-time officers; to aid in traffic and crowd control at any event in which large crowds assemble; such as Pioneer Days and the Lake County Fair; and to assist in routine patrol and enforcement activities at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

All Reserve Police Officers will complete the department’s Field Training Program.  Reserve Police Officers are required to purchase and maintain all required uniforms and accessories at their own expense.  In addition, Reserve Police Officers will be required to pass a firearm proficiency test with their firearm.

All Reserve Police Officers are required to attend a Reserve Officer Training course and it will be paid for by the Ronan Police Department.

All Reserve Police Officers are subordinate to full-time law enforcement officers, and may not serve unless supervised by an on duty full-time law enforcement officer.

VIPS – Volunteers in Police Service

Volunteers are an important part of any organization and are proven to be a valuable asset to law enforcement agencies.  Volunteers help to increase police responsiveness, service delivery, and information input, and they provide new program opportunities.  In addition, volunteers can bring new skills and expertise to the job and prompt new enthusiasm.  The Ronan Police Department uses qualified volunteers for specified tasks and duties that can create efficiencies for the department and improve services to the community.  Volunteers are intended to supplement and support, rather than supplant, sworn officers and civilian personnel.

Volunteer: Someone who performs service for the Ronan Police Department without promise, expectation, or receipt of compensation for services rendered.  This may include unpaid chaplains, unpaid reserve officers, interns, persons providing administrative support, and youth involved in a Law Enforcement Explorer Post, among others.
